Researchers recruited 221 healthy women trying to conceive, and had them collect a daily urine sample and log every day they had intercourse, for as long as it took to get pregnant. What they found: conception only happened when intercourse occurred within a six-day window ending on the day of ovulation itself, never later, and rarely much earlier. The Honest Catch: Surviving and Actually Succeeding Aren't the Same Thing

This is the part almost no article mentions, and it's genuinely the most useful piece of the whole picture. In that same 221-woman study, researchers could tell roughly how old the fertilising sperm were in each pregnancy, based on exactly when intercourse happened relative to ovulation. Not for long, and this part isn't really in dispute. Semen needs to stay warm and moist to keep sperm alive, once it's exposed to air on skin, bedding, or clothing, it starts drying out and sperm lose motility within minutes.

The old advice to "avoid regular lubricants" and "track ovulation" is genuinely sound, it's just usually presented without saying where it comes from.
